[EDITOR'S NOTE: Carriers have not yet published official 2026 holiday deadlines. Update the table below when USPS/UPS announce dates (typically October) before publishing.]

As of July 2026, USPS and UPS have not published their official 2026 holiday shipping deadlines — both carriers typically announce them in the fall, with USPS releasing its 2025 dates on September 17, 2025. Based on recent seasons, plan on ground-service cutoffs around December 17–18 and expedited cutoffs between December 19 and December 23. Christmas Day 2026 falls on a Friday, so expect the published dates to land close to last year's calendar.

When official 2026 dates will be announced

USPS publishes its recommended send-by dates in a fall newsroom release and on its seasonal holiday page (usps.com/holiday), which goes dormant between seasons. UPS publishes a year-end holiday schedule covering pickup, delivery, and last days to ship. Both usually land in September or October. Until then, the most reliable planning tool is last season's official dates — shown below, clearly labeled as 2025 dates.

USPS holiday shipping deadlines (2025 dates, as a planning guide)

These are the official USPS recommended send-by dates for expected delivery before December 25, 2025, in the contiguous 48 states:

USPS service2025 deadline (lower 48)What to expect for 2026
USPS Ground AdvantageDecember 17, 2025Similar mid-December cutoff; confirm in October
First-Class Mail (cards, letters)December 17, 2025Similar mid-December cutoff
Priority MailDecember 18, 2025Roughly a week before Christmas
Priority Mail ExpressDecember 20, 2025The last-resort window, days before Christmas

Alaska, Hawaii, and U.S. territories run earlier — Ground Advantage's 2025 deadline there was December 16 — and military APO/FPO/DPO mail runs earlier still. If you ship to those destinations, treat every deadline as several days sooner.

UPS 3 Day SelectDecember 19, 2025
UPS 2nd Day AirDecember 22, 2025
UPS Next Day AirDecember 23, 2025

UPS does not pick up or deliver on Christmas Day, and Christmas Eve service is limited — air services only in the 2025 schedule, with pickups prearranged days ahead.

How to plan before the official dates drop

  • Work backward from December 25 (a Friday in 2026). Count your service's transit days, then add a buffer day or two for peak-season volume.
  • Cheapest ships earliest. Ground Advantage and UPS Ground need the earliest handoff; the deeper into December you go, the more each remaining option costs.
  • Front-load your holiday promotions. Every order you pull into early December ships on cheap ground service instead of panic-priced air.
  • Know your upgrade path. When a late order misses the ground window, upgrading to Priority Mail or UPS air at commercial discounts — up to 89% off USPS and up to 82% off UPS retail rates through Ship.com — costs a fraction of the retail counter price. Compare services on our USPS and UPS rates page.
  • Watch tracking daily in deadline week. If a December package stalls, our guide to a USPS package stuck in transit covers when to worry and what to do.

Why the dates shift a little every year

Deadlines move by a day or two year to year because the calendar moves: which weekday Christmas lands on changes how many pickup days fit into deadline week. Carriers also adjust for network capacity and peak-season surcharge windows. That is why the safe play is to treat last year's dates minus one day as your working deadline until the official 2026 dates publish — and to update this page the day they do.

Frequently asked questions

When will USPS announce the 2026 holiday shipping deadlines?

Expect a fall announcement — USPS released its 2025 recommended dates on September 17, 2025, via its newsroom, and posts them on usps.com/holiday. UPS publishes its year-end schedule around the same time of year.

Are holiday deadlines guaranteed delivery dates?

No. USPS dates are recommended send-by dates, not guarantees. Money-back service guarantees apply only to specific services such as Priority Mail Express and UPS air products — and carriers can modify guarantee terms during peak, so check the current terms before promising a customer a date.

What is the cheapest way to ship holiday gifts?

Ship early on ground services. USPS Ground Advantage and UPS Ground cost the least, and shipping in early-to-mid December means you never pay for speed you did not need. Commercial discounts of up to 89% off USPS and up to 82% off UPS retail widen that gap further.

What should I do if I miss the ground deadline?

Upgrade: Priority Mail typically buys you an extra day or two, and Priority Mail Express or UPS Next Day Air cover the final days before Christmas. Buy the upgrade at commercial rates through shipping software rather than at a retail counter.
