Updated July 2026. Rates and policies verified against carrier-published sources; see references at the end.

If you're a direct sales consultant earning 25–35% commission, shipping is the single biggest controllable cost in your business: a $9.45 retail label on a $100 order consumes roughly a third of a $30 commission, while the same package with commercial pricing can start at $5.50. This guide covers the 2026 rates that matter, when to use USPS versus UPS, how to set up a home shipping station, how to get packages picked up free, and how to turn every shipment into the next order.

The margin math: why consultants can't ship at retail

Direct sales compensation usually pays 25–35% of retail on personal sales. That makes your shipping cost a percentage of your commission, not just a percentage of the order. Work one example:

  • Customer order: $100. Your commission at 30%: $30.
  • Ship an 8 oz product to Zone 4 at Post Office retail: $8.30 — 28% of your commission, gone.
  • Ship the same package at commercial pricing (which starts at $5.50 for light packages): you keep $2.40–$2.80 more on this one order.

Now multiply. At 60 shipments a month, saving $2.40 per label returns $144/month — $1,728 a year — for exactly the same service, same tracking, same 2–5 day delivery. That's before you count the orders where the gap is wider (heavier packages, longer zones, UPS comparisons). Commercial pricing isn't a nice-to-have at 30% commission; it's the difference between a side hustle that pays and one that doesn't. If you charge customers flat-rate shipping, the math is even more direct: every dollar saved on the label is a dollar of pure margin.

The 2026 USPS rates every consultant should know

USPS Ground Advantage is the default service for consumable products: tracked, insured to $100, delivered in 2–5 business days, priced by weight and zone. Current retail prices from USPS Notice 123 (July 2026):

Package weightZone 1 (local)Zone 4 (mid-distance)Zone 8 (cross-country)
Up to 8 oz$7.90$8.30$9.45
Up to 15.999 oz$9.55$10.60$12.90
2 lb$10.80$13.00$19.05
5 lb$12.95$15.80$26.05
10 lb$15.95$19.40$39.45

For faster orders, Priority Mail (1–3 business days) starts at $11.00 retail for 1 lb in Zone 1 ($16.95 in Zone 8), and flat rate options run $12.90 (envelope), $13.65 (small box), $24.80 (medium box), and $34.00 (large box) — flat rate only wins for heavy products going far. Commercial pricing through a shipping platform starts at $5.50 for Ground Advantage's lightest tier; see our full explainer on how USPS commercial rates work.

Three rule changes took effect July 12, 2026 that consultants should know: USPS eliminated ounce tiers from its published commercial Ground Advantage prices (platforms with negotiated rates, including Ship.com, still offer ounce-tier pricing in the contiguous U.S.), every package dimension now rounds up to the next whole inch, and the dimensional-weight divisor dropped from 166 to 139 for boxes over 1 cubic foot. Translation: weigh accurately, measure accurately, and use the smallest box that protects the product. Full breakdown in our post on the July 2026 USPS rate changes.

USPS or UPS? Use both

Consultants who ship with one carrier overpay on part of their volume. The working rules:

  • USPS Ground Advantage: best for packages under about 5 lbs, PO boxes, and APO/FPO military addresses. Includes $100 insurance and free carrier pickup.
  • USPS Priority Mail: when the customer needs it in 1–3 days; also includes $100 insurance.
  • UPS Ground: heavier and bulkier shipments — team supply orders, event stock, wholesale cases. UPS accepts up to 150 lbs per package versus USPS's 70 lb limit, and offers day-definite delivery.

The only way to know which carrier wins a given order is to quote both at commercial rates. Ship.com shows USPS and UPS side by side with discounts up to 89% off USPS and up to 82% off UPS retail — see UPS and USPS best rates.

Set up a home shipping station (under $150)

A corner of a desk is enough. Four components:

  1. A digital shipping scale. The single highest-ROI purchase you'll make. Guessing weight means either overpaying or getting hit with postage adjustments — and since July 2026, missing or wrong package data carries USPS noncompliance fees. Weigh every package.
  2. A 4x6 thermal label printer. No ink, no taping paper printouts, roughly two seconds per label. If you're not ready, print-and-tape works — start shipping first, optimize later.
  3. A small box and mailer inventory. Two or three box sizes matched to your product line, poly and bubble mailers for soft or small goods. USPS supplies free Priority Mail boxes and envelopes; for Ground Advantage you use your own packaging.
  4. A tape measure. USPS now rounds dimensions up to the next whole inch, so enter exact outer dimensions when you buy labels.

Then connect your order sources so you're not retyping addresses. Ship.com integrates with direct sales platforms including Exigo, plus Shopify, Etsy, eBay, Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, Square, Wix, WooCommerce, Squarespace, Ecwid, and PayPal — orders flow in, labels flow out. Stop driving to the Post Office

Every consultant trip to the counter costs 30–60 minutes that could be selling time — and at retail counter rates, you pay more for the label, too. Two better options:

  • Free USPS carrier pickup. Your regular mail carrier collects prepaid packages from your door during their normal route, at no charge. Schedule it online by 2 AM CT the night before; our step-by-step guide to scheduling a USPS pickup covers it. (USPS also sells a paid Pickup on Demand service with a dedicated time window, but with free carrier pickup available, few consultants ever need it. On Ship.com, Growth and Executive plans include carrier pickup requests right in the app.)
  • UPS pickup or drop-off for heavy shipments — or hand packages to any UPS driver you see.

Batch your work: pick a daily or every-other-day cutoff, print all labels at once, stage packages by the door, and let the carrier do the driving.

Product-specific playbooks

Consumable products each have their own failure modes — heat, breakage, regulations. We've written a dedicated guide for each of the big three direct sales categories:

Selling internationally to team members or customers abroad? Start with our international shipping page — customs forms and HS codes are the two things that trip up first-time exporters.

Turn shipping into repeat sales

Direct sales lives on reorders. The consultant who sells one $100 order earns $30 once; the consultant whose customer reorders monthly earns $360 a year from the same person — and pays nothing extra to acquire them. Shipping touches are your highest-open-rate customer communications, so use them:

  • Tracking emails get opened. Nearly every customer opens a "your order shipped" email. Personalize those notifications with your name and a reorder link instead of sending a bare carrier notice.
  • Reward the refill. A points-per-purchase rewards program gives consumable-product customers a concrete reason to reorder from you rather than a marketplace. Ship.com includes a built-in customer loyalty rewards program on Executive plans.
  • Automate the reminder. A 30-day supply runs out in 30 days. Schedule a refill-reminder campaign; Ship.com's built-in email marketing sends up to 25,000 emails a month on Executive — no separate email tool or subscription needed.
  • Deliver consistently. Accurate tracking, clean packaging, and a fast handoff to the carrier are retention tools. Late, untracked packages are how customers drift to Amazon.

What it costs to run this stack

Ship.com plans (verified July 2026): Starter at $4.99/month covers up to 10 shipments — the right entry point for a new consultant. Growth at $19.99/month ($14/month billed annually) covers up to 100 shipments, batch label printing, and carrier pickup requests. Executive at $29.99/month ($22/month billed annually) is unlimited shipments plus the loyalty program, business reporting, and the 25,000-email marketing allowance. Every plan includes discounted USPS and UPS rates, and support comes from humans — Ship.com is rated 4.9/5 by more than 10,000 users. Compare plans on the pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

How should a direct sales consultant charge customers for shipping?

Either pass through your real commercial rate (fairest, and easy when your platform shows the exact label price), or set a flat rate slightly above your average commercial label cost — never above retail. Free-shipping thresholds ("free over $75") work well for nudging order size upward.

What's the cheapest way to ship small direct sales orders?

USPS Ground Advantage with commercial pricing. Packages under 1 pound start at $5.50 through shipping platforms versus $7.90–$12.90 at Post Office retail (July 2026), with tracking and $100 insurance included either way.

Do I need a business account to get commercial shipping rates?

No. Shipping platforms like Ship.com pass negotiated commercial pricing to anyone with an account — there's no volume minimum, and Ship.com discounts reach up to 89% off USPS and up to 82% off UPS retail rates.

Is USPS pickup really free?

Yes. Package pickup by your regular carrier during their normal route is free — USPS confirms free package pickup as one of its standard options. Schedule it online the day before; only the premium time-window Pickup on Demand service costs extra.

How do I ship orders for my team or downline?

Treat team supply shipments like wholesale: they're heavier, so quote UPS alongside USPS (UPS takes up to 150 lbs per box), and batch them on a schedule instead of shipping ad hoc. Integrations with direct sales platforms like Exigo pull team orders into one dashboard automatically.
