Meet the Queen of the Side Hustle

We need to let you in on a little secret. “Side hustles” are not a new trend. In fact, some people have been running the side hustle game since the 80s. That’s right, taking on a side hustle (whether to make a separate income or monetize a passion) has been a common practice for a while.

That’s how Ship.com came to be. We’re not a side hustle turned large-scale company, but a business inspired by the queen of the side hustle herself – Jean DiSorbo. Jean is the mom of our Founder and CEO, Joe DiSorbo.

Joe grew up around many side hustles. From wig shops and hairdressing classes and a salon to an exercise company and a small shipping store, Jean was always working on something new. The common success among all of them? They generated revenue and gave Jean the freedom she always wanted in a job. Side hustles became her full-time hustle, opening up a world of flexibility and financial freedom for her and her family. Being an entrepreneur is as challenging as it is rewarding. Whether you’re just starting your entrepreneurial journey, or know the life well, we want to share some key insights that will benefit your business.

Here are the core takeaways of being an entrepreneur from the queen of side hustles herself.

Support Local Small Businesses

Share the love with other small businesses in your area. As a small business owner yourself, why wouldn’t you want to encourage and support other entrepreneurs in your area? Creating a solid community is a must for entrepreneurs. Not only will you help out others, but you’ll build a rapport with customers and make a name for yourself!

Customer Service is Key

The purpose of customer service? To make everything easier for the customer. Think of it this way: the quicker, easier, and more enjoyable your customer’s experiences are with your business, the more likely they are to return. Customer service is a long game. Take feedback into consideration and refine your processes and communication tactics to put them first. Good customer service equals customer loyalty, which is the foundation for a profitable business.

Innovate Within Your Area

Jean made a splash as an entrepreneur by taking chances and thinking outside of the box. She transferred big city ideas to the smaller town where she lived and worked. Those fresh ideas immediately grabbed the attention of her community and set her business up for success. Don’t wash, rinse and repeat the same ideas and hope that they’ll work. Instead, uncover how you can be an innovator in your area. Jean kept a pulse on the culture of her small town and knew which products and business ideas would find success.

Love What You Do

Success doesn’t taste as sweet if you’re not happy with what you’re doing. Sure, a nice paycheck is always a win – but if you’re sacrificing your time and freedom, is it really worth it? At the end of the day, we encourage you to love what you do. Yes, a paycheck is necessary and there are bills to pay, but if you can find a way to contribute to your family’s finances while being in control of your time and vocation, why wouldn’t you?
